Do you recognize the West Coast Unitarian pictured in this 1902 photo? Born in 1849 on a farm near Lancaster, Mass., where he received only a high school education, in his mid-twenties, he moved to Santa Rosa in California, where he devoted the next 55 years to experimental plant growth, becoming famous for developing hundreds of strains of new plants. Though he tended to be private about his religious beliefs most of his life, the last months of it he declared: "I am an infidel... I do not believe what has been served up for me to believe. I am a doubter, a questioner, a skeptic..." He died in 1926. Answer?
